At the beginning of your day, you look in your closet and decide what to wear. This can be very stressful. Sometimes you love what you see, sometimes you hate what you see. In the end, you need to wear something.

Now, imagine having the chicest person in your neighbourhood, school, or workplace come up to you and offer to dress you. She is wearing an 80’s rock t-shirt with small pearls draped around her neck. She pairs her silk short shorts with dirty canvas shoes, and her hair is in a messy bun. You call her the Fairy Godmother of Style.

Amy Lu is that Fairy Godmother of Style. This Canadian-based fashion stylist has dressed people from arts, music, sports, and much more.

From an early age, clothing had always been part of her identity.

“I was putting looks together every night before pre-school and cutting up back-to-school flyers during summer holidays to pull together a wish list of back-to-school clothes. I don’t think I realized that it was going to be my career, it was just a passion of mine.”

This passion quickly transformed into something real when she heard of a fashion merchandising certificate program at school, and promptly signed up for it.

Her first styling job was a collaboration with a student photographer, which only increased her determination to make styling her career.

To make a name in the industry, serious talent and word of mouth helped hone her résumé.

“It is actually a very small industry. Everybody knows everybody. I styled quite a lot of editorial, which probably helped get my name out there.”

Despite being surrounded by creative people or exotic backgrounds, fashion styling can be very stressful. A limited budget and limited time can dampen any shoot, especially when nothing but perfection is expected.

Amy also mentions that “styling other people is about putting your personal taste and vision aside and understanding what will work for someone else. Just because you like a certain style or trend does not mean that it will work on someone else.”

Her dream shoot?

“Kate Moss for the cover and inside story of W Magazine with Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh. The thought of it melts my fashion heart!”

For the upcoming summer trends, Amy recommends investing in preppy trousers, luxe jersey t-shirts, and tailored blazers.

“It’s not about having a million trendy pieces, but rather investing in key pieces and good denim.
